I've been in the US for the last 13 years, but I've got to travel more in the past year than in the previous 12, and I'm loving it (yay, Patty and her, contagious, love of traveling) .
Now, I realized that I need to rethink my travel kit, here's what I usually bring for travel:
I learned a couple of things in the last couple of trips, I LOOOOOOOVE SEA LIONS!!!!!, my 85mm is crap for my travel photography (you may disagree, and I'm sure you can point out great examples of photography using any lens, but for the type of images I use it for, it is not working for me, especially comparing it to the 50mm), when visiting several locations, I need to do a gear check before departing a hotel (as I manage to leave my tripod in San Francisco, and had to run to get a new one in LA); and I need to stop packing so many lights (because I've yet to be in a situation where I needed strobes, again, for the type of photography I do during trips), also, I need to bite the bullet and buy real ND filters (as the plastic ones introduce a very annoying color cast that suck a big one).
I'm going to start carrying the 70-300mm again (I could have really used for the sea lions and the surfers on the West Coast trip) for travels, and to compensate for the extra weight, I'm probably gonna shed some weight on the lights and extra AA batteries.
